Tuesday, April 25, in Arizona, Seal is kicking off his 30th anniversary tour, during which he’ll play his first two albums — Seal and Seal II — in their entireties. Seal says he’s excited to dig into the parts of those albums he doesn’t normally do in concert.
“I can’t think of anything I’d rather do more than to tour and play those songs,” he tells ABC Audio. “I don’t necessarily play stuff from the old albums, other than the kind of pinnacle tracks like ‘Kiss from a Rose,’ ‘Prayer for the Dying,’ and ‘Crazy’ and things like that … so it’s a great opportunity to be able to do that, especially with Trevor.”
“Trevor” is Trevor Horn, who you may know as the guy with the big glasses in the “Video Killed the Radio Star” video. He’s the frontman of The Buggles, but he’s also a legendary producer who signed Seal to his first record deal and produced Seal’s first two albums. The Buggles are opening for Seal on the tour, then Horn will join him onstage as musical director.
“What makes it, I guess, even more exciting for me is that [Trevor] is M.D.-ing those songs that he produced,” Seal says. “So if it is possible to replicate and enhance upon every bit of emotion of those records, he’s going to be the person to do that.”
But no matter what song he’s singing, Seal says he has one goal in mind when he does concerts.
“If you were to say, ‘OK Seal, what do you hope to achieve with these live shows — other than everyone having a good time?’ My answer would be I just want to connect,” he tells ABC Audio. “When we are connected, I think that’s when we’re at our most beautiful.”
